My only problem (and I use Firefox) has been a couple of times, when the screen is changing back from a thread to the forum front page, I briefly get a screen of stuff that turns out to be enormous type--200 size or more. One serif takes up a whole laptop screen. But it never lasts long enough for me to see what it says. It's only happened two times, but it's weird.

Sorry, Gungas. I'm not used to people actually wanting to talk about anything serious.

I've read that story before, and I've had similar things happen to me, which is why I try not to be judgmental. We all go out into the world on any given day, little pods of context that nobody else knows about. That scowling person who bumped into you and just kept on going may have just lost his job, or had a fight with her mother, or come from a grueling tax audit--ANYTHING.

And the older I get, the more I have to fight to prevent turning into that automaton. I was just thinking about that today--checking in with myself. Do I do things because I enjoy them or because they contribute to my enjoyment of life or my personal enrichment, or am I just doing them because I think I'm supposed to? And what if the answer is the latter? Do I have the courage to change?

These questions were a piece of cake 30 years ago. They're not anymore.

In that same vein, I highly recommend a book John recommended on his old site, and that I've read: "Time and The Soul" by Jacob Needleman. John wrote a beautiful little foreword to the book, and the book itself is full of good bones to gnaw on, spiritually and mentally.

Okay, I realize you're right, Gungas about freedom of speech etc., but until some critic has done this to you about something you created, you don't know how awful it feels. It does hurt emotionally, and it hurts financially, too, because some people reading the critic will decide there is something wrong with what you created and they won't give it a chance. But most of all, it's just mean, in my opinion. I think a true "critic" would give what is good and what is bad. I think a lot of critics forget that it is just their opinion, and instead they pretend to be the final judgment, and that isn't fair, either. There should be more of , "this is how I feel but you might feel differently", instead of "this is pathetic".

Appropriate to this area, Cleese has a great interest in California wine and winemaking, and hosted the documentary "Wine for the Confused," a lighthearted introduction to wine for novices.

"Food and wine were the pleasures of my life," Cleese said. "Now, I can't digest anything with dairy or gluten. I can go into a coffee shop and survey it all and there's nothing I can eat but a single espresso. That leaves wine. Thank God for wine."

His performance, generically described as "a behind-the-scenes look at the zany and hilarious world of comedy" will be more like a free-wheeling oral history, he said. "There will be a bit at the beginning about why I'm doing this stuff, which is the alimony. Then there will be some biography, some talk about why I became a comedian, my relationship with my mother, what it was like in England at the time of 'Python' and why/how I rebelled against it."

Cleese will share stories about "working with very interesting people (such as) Marty Engles and Ringo Starr, leading up to the formation of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

"If you want to understand what that process was like, you must consider that we were writers, not performers. We had no idea what to do on stage and whether anyone would watch — in fact, we were pretty sure they wouldn't."

Well, first there was Mighty Mouse. Then there was Billy Gail in second grade, but he grew up to be a stuck up snob, so I'm glad nothing ever happened there. Then there was Davy Jones, then a whole string of teen idols and a few older men (Christopher Plummer in "Sound of Music"--be still my beating heart!), then I got stuck on older men for good. My best friend and I went to see "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" 8 times just to see Harrison Ford with his shirt off. I can't think of the rest right now; there were so many!

When I was 8-9 I liked Duran Duran AND Spandau Ballet (I didn't give a fuck these bands were rivals, I loved them both. My favourite member from Duran Duran was Roger, the drummer. Never liked Simon LeBon. The second fav was John Taylor. My fav Spandau Ballet's member was Martin Kemp, though I liked his brother Gary, too.)

Oh I love Carol of the Bells! Fun song! The correct way is to hold the vowel out, but you know that.However, since you're making the sound of the bell with that donnnnng, and a bell has an echo and the sound would be more like a bell if you hold out the nnn. I don't know! I guess if they don't pinch off the n and turn it all nasal sounding , then it would be kind of throaty and neat with the nnnnn more than the ooooooooo, or, you could possibly go doooooonnnnnooooonnnnnngggg and compromise with a kind of built in bell echo.

Now that I think of it on the high pitched dings, you hear more of a landing on the "ng" on the ding's, kind of like emphasis on that, and the instrumental part has accents on the last part of it, doesn't it? Been so long since I've seen a sheet of it.

Well, except that "My Ding-a-Ling" is in 4, and in a major key; "Carol of the Bells" is in 3 and in a minor key. So you'd have to be careful mashing the bits together to make it work.

We decided that the shorter dongs would be cut off, and the longer dongs would be held out. So under the sopranos, we've got dinnnnnnnnng, donnnnnnnnnng, dinnnnnnnnng, donnnnnnnnng; and where the dongs are more than 3 beats, they're dooooooooooooong.

I'm using chrome and I can hear it. If I were to redo it I would lose the bizarre graphics at the beginning, bring down the music so we can hear the dialogue. The mistake most people make in film 101 is to try to match the visuals to what the lyrics are saying for no apparent reason other than to do so. Like:

Leaving on a jet plane - show a jet plane taking off

Don't know when I'll be back again - have a guy shrug to the camera and then look at his watch.

On the other hand there are some endearing shots, esp. the one from 'Jaws' and Cleese on the couch and the editing is spot on.

In the end it's so kitschy it's funny.
