Dennis Hopper was the name of the man in "Blue Velvet" and the song I found so creepy in it was "Dreams" sung by Roy Orbison. Not any suberbia I was ever aware of,but then, I have never really lived in the suburbs. Dreams is a plantiff song on it's own. Put in this atmosphere really takes away your breath. Minnelli was incredible in Caberet.

This is a wonderful experience, Looney. It is so nice to hear of people who can have such a nice one. Did you keep the staff?
  2.
Yup, I did. I even used it as a pinata stick for my 7th birthday!

Does it have Carnival celebrations where you live, zelda? (In T&T, it's emphasized upon very much....you wouldn't believe!)

I wrote and accidently deleted my New Orleaans Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) info for, Looney. Mardi Gras is our Carnival celebration named after Point de Mardi Gras, a spot on the Mississippi river leading to NO. Like all, there are elaborate parades and parties, hooting and hollering! The famous Boubon Street parties for a week..girls raise thier blouses for doubloons, beads and moon pies, drunks galore get arrested for public urination; music, fun insanity.. What I like is it brings people together.
(I avoid the dark spots). There are neighborhood groups with thier own parades, parties, socials with many fit for children. It was one of the first happenings in New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricaine Katrina and got the city moving again. There are charitable events also. BUT, at the stroke of Tuesday's midnight the New Orlean's city police come with thier horses and bulldovers to the French Quarter and clear the streets of drunks and junk!
Do I sound like the NO Chamber of Commerce? She asked!

'Chicago is one of about 15 videos I have at the beach (no TV). I have watched Zellweger
over and over. I actually prefer, "Bridget Jones" and her "Cold Moutain" character. Versatility.
  4.
Yeah, she's great - I've also enjoyed Down With Love (Ewan ). Have yet to see Cold Mountain unfortunately.

Speaking of Ewan - coincidentally, I'm listening to this right now:

I thought "Mardi Gras" was French for "Fat Tuesday", hence the name down in NO.

We don't do much in New England. Pass out cheap shiny bead necklaces, eat pancakes, try to figure out what "Shrove" means.

Tis French for fat tuesday. I am told the original carnival was named because of the association with Pointe de Mardi Gras, sometime in past;the French being early settlers ( and less puritanical-yes-than many American spots)!

Shrove-past tense for Shrive-go to confession, repent
on the day before lent. (it rhymes, Chrissy)!
Mardi Gras in America was started in Mobile, Alabama 110 miles east of New Orleans. And that's the truth.

But does anyone remember Collop Monday? According to Wikipedia, it's the day before Shrove Tuesday, and you're supposed to eat the last little bit ("collop") of meat before Lent.

Collop. No, but that what Fat Tuesday is all about.

LOL!!! Thanks for that lovely description, zelda! I've always heard of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but I wasn't too sure what it was about- I normally just associate it with beads and boobs :swingin::wink:

"(I avoid the dark spots)"- Don't worry, we tend to brush over those parts too!

Uh... GP and the Nocturnals... never heard of them before... What an awesome, tight band. They're all fantastic.
  7.
Yeah... They had a single out this year from their newest album, called "Paris (Ooh La La)", really great song. Got me hooked
  8.
Oooh, I heard that song! really awesome! XD
The first time I heard of them, I think, was from the vh1 special on Woodstock where they were doing some covers of Janis Joplin songs... Grace did some really fantastic vocals!
  9.
I love her voice! I also love Joss Stone's voice

    Incredible
  10.
"colour me free"- what a wonderful phrase!

I agree with you there- she has a powerful, *empowering* (for lack of a better adjective) voice, doesn't she?

I absolutely adore Dolores O'Rioridan's singing style + voice as well (when I was little I couldn't distinguish between Alanis Morisette and Dolores... HA!):

And well, there's always Melanie Safka:

It was Lena Horne, who played the part on Broadway. I heard her say she lipsinked (?) all of Ava's songs when she, Lena, did not get the coveted part...too "colored".

"Showboat" is only shown in limited occasions. Try to find a copy. It is by far my absolute favorite of the ld musicals. Makes my heart actually ache.

Zelda: The part had to be played in the movie by someone who could pass as white--that was the whole point. According to IMDb, "Her singing voice in Show Boat (1951) was dubbed by Annette Warren, although her voice is left in on the soundtrack album."

Yes, but Horne, did play it on Broadway and was bitter at not playin the movie, though she loved, Ava anyway. They told her she was "too colored" meaning, no, you cannot pass! Horne did dub voices for some oart of it as told on this interview. Probaly her voice was too colered, too. I do love Show Boat, Ava and Lena! Frank Sinatra sent Ava support money until the day she died. That is love! (No, he was not ordered, to).

"The Profits Of Doom" - Type O Negative

Of this shape a star of five
Also applies to the one with six sides
Against the sun and against the moon
I warn you that these two combined
    Will bring man's doom
Of ten horns and seven heads
Count your fingers and the continents
On your forehead or in your right hand
This new moral code that the media commands

Believe not in their clever words
Because faith inact(ed) are the loudest heard
All these things I say are true
Understood sadly by a chosen few

    April 2029 the final time
The end my friend is not near
The hour in fact is quite hear
    When the moon becomes red
    To guide the living dead
This means God's turned his back on you
    It's a Friday 13th of course
You won't live to see noon

I am a prophet of doom

So now the star has fallen
    Washing away the seas
    The seventh seal's been opened
    It's raining your fears
    Are you paranoid
    The coming asteroid
Has got your name tattooed on it
    This stone's called Apophis

    It brings apocalypse
I am a prophet of doom

    Speak the name of he
    Created thee all to be
    Which should not be spoken
    No laws broken

Now life and love the stars above
Which fall upon the all that worship the beast
    Influences ceased

    My faith is an ember
    Burning ever
    Working towards a greater reward
    Serving my lured

Built this home upon the rock
    Not of the flock
    But coming as a shepherd
    Guarding his heard

    My soul's on fire

I love that! Here's the translation, for those who need it. Such beautiful, sad words:

The moon, all too fair, in your russet-red hair sets a sparkling crown
The moon, all too red with glory, is spread on your poor, tattered gown
The moon, all too white, caresses the light in your world-weary eyes
Princess of the street, do allow me to greet you, my broken heart cries
The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor
The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours
I feel, beggar-girl, your fetters, they curl as they seek out my wrists
I feel your young breasts, your thin little waist
    I lose my regrets
I taste on your mouth the feverish breath of a half-starving waif
And with your caress I sense drunkenness erasing my life
The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor
The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours
And see how she skips, the moon how she drifts,
    The princess in tow
Da da da da da da da da da da
    My reveries grow
The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor
The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours

That is beautiful... There's a version of the song where the chorus is half English, and it's a little bit different, but also beautiful: "The stairways up to la butte can make the wretched sigh... While windmill wings of the Moulin shelter you and I..."

LOVE THEM OP!!! Especially Alanis and the white stripes... ahh! :rainbow: It's amazing how simple yet effective jack white's songs are- and there are only 2 ppl in the band! The first song i heard from them was seven nation army though
  22.
That's a great song  one of my favorites

It's actually their videos that got me hooked at first - I saw the vids for Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground and Fell in Love With a Girl, and thought they were just amazing (directed by the wonderful Michel Gondry). From there on, I just started loving their music. I love how raw they are, how their music is just distorted and wild, and not perfectly clean and engineered. They used to record all together - the singing, guitars and drumming - they'd record the song in the same room at the same time, and not seperately in the studio like people usually do.

Do you know Ball and Biscuit? Also one of my favorites, and I was really ecstatic when I watched The Social Network, and that song accompanied the opening scene... :)

This is a beautiful song I absolutely love, By John Mayer, called "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room". I found this video of a gorgeous dance number done to this song, choreographed by Wade Robson. They manipulated the song a bit to fit the dance, but it's still good. Thought I'd share, in case it interested anyone.

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

I just love the lyrics... :

It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love that we've been working on

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody's gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We're going down... And you can see it too
We're going down, and you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me?
Baby you're the only light I ever saw

I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You'll try to hit me just to hurt me so you leave me feeling dirty
    'cause you can't understand

    We're going down...

Go cry about it, why don't you
Go cry about it, why don't you
Go cry about it, why don't you
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room.

Don't you think we oughta know by now,
Don't you think we should have learned somehow...
