Inside are three rollers, two long and one slim. They get dirt around them in a circle and it has to all be tickled off. (Before optical mice started to be issued as standard, I used to make the customers laugh by saying things like "Coochy, coochy coo..." while getting the dirt out)

Personally, even though I'm a little on the sexual broad minded side, I got fed up of playing with mice balls and got myself a souped up laser mouse with a mat. They don't like shiny surfaces, so my shiny mouse mat with the picture of George Clooney had to go in favour of a Razor Destructor for home gaming. At work I use a cheaper Razer Kabuto, though. Optical mice really ... reeeeaaaallly like them. For me, it was worth the ten squids I had to wrestle out of the fish tank and push down the phone line to Amazon's bank.

The new mouse is a Logitech MX518, but even that's been superseded. It's hyper-accurate and more than is needed for a home office, (I use it for swatting those pesky alien enemies) so a lesser optical mouse will easily do for general work.
