From the latest Pythonline Update newsletter Jul-8-11:
New BBC drama
The BBC are also currently filming a drama about the controversy surrounding the release of Monty Python’s Life of Brian in 1979. At the time, church leaders protested over the production claiming ihe movie mocked Christ and it was subsequently banned in several countries. But the Life of Brian was a huge box-office success, earning the fourth-highest takings in the UK in 1979 and the highest for any British film in the US that year.
Shortly after the film was released, John Cleese and Michael Palin engaged in a now famous debate on the BBC Two discussion programme Friday Night, Saturday Morning. Broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark, the Right Reverend Mervyn Stockwood, argued the film was an attack on the Christian faith.\
The new drama will be written by Tony Roche, whose other credits include In the Loop and The Thick of It. Owen Harris, who has worked on Misfits and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, has signed up to direct.
The BBC said the 90-minute film would incorporate "surreal cutaways including puppetry and animation".
Controller of BBC Four Richard Klein said: "This is a smart and witty take on both the nature of censorship and the world of Monty Python.
"Tony Roche's script is both bold and entertaining, a wonderfully warm homage to one of the most original of British comedy teams."
Darren Boyd will play John Cleese, Charles Edwards has been cast in the role of Michael Palin , Steve Punt will star as Eric Idle, Rufus Jones plays Terry Jones, Scots-Canadian former Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Phil Nichol is Terry Gilliam and Tom Fisher plays the late Graham Chapman.
It's not a skit where they're trying to imitate the originals, so I think doing it this way, as opposed to straight-on documentary featuring interviews with the surviving Pythons, might broaden the audience market. If you'll excuse the pun, I think it's more important to be "faithful" to the original events than to use the actual old cronies, sorry, fella's!
(It's great to see all those pics in there! That was fast, Naughty!)
Lol I was in dire need of a distraction... Also, google is pretty fast you know.
I think the documentary thing has been done to death, so it's nice to get a fresh view of the matter. Though I find it strange that this article didn't mention any of the real Pythons' reactions - if they're cooperating or involved in any way, were they even consulted, if they think it's a shit idea...
I'm looking forward to watching it. But I can't imagine the Pythons being played by others... They should play themselves. Once I told Lozzy that even Graham should play himself - his urn with his photo on it, and using his recorded voice as narratives what he's saying, or he should communicate via subtitles.
Didn't we alreay discuss this?... Oh, no, it was somewhere else. I mean, I don't think it will be a successfull experiment, but I hope I will be proved wrong. Terry Jones wrote in his Twitter to the giy who played him: ---------------- Terry Jones @rufusjones1 Hi Rufus. I don't envy you having to get into bed with Charles Edwards but it’s all in a good cause. Hope he washed his feet. -----------------
Get into bed? What sort of film this is then?? Young girl's perversive fantasies about all the Pythons being gay and sleeping with each other? Makes me sick thinking about that. And by the way : this Darren Boyd playing John has got Twitter too, and he writes the following: ------------ DarrenJBoyd Darren Boyd Have had two days off from Python. Tomorrow I'll be telling Michael Palin that I love him. And attempting to attack a bishop. As you do.. ------------
Sick or waht??? My expectations are sinking low. Now I expect it to be daft at best and stupid in average. GRRRR.
They will also repeat the live debate where John and Michael face two honest and open-minded *cough* bishops who want the film banned. That sounds more interesting to me. It's the one occasion when Michael gets truly upset.
It wasn't two bishops, Spiny. It was one Bishop (Southwark) and Malcolm Muggeridge, who had a huge reputation as a Christian writer/thinker at that time. He was quite famous in the US, too.
First half of it can be seen here, sadly it is incomplete (the bit where Michael kicks the bishop in the groin has been edited out, can you believe it): http://depositfiles.com/en/files/3b8djp39q
I have to get an account just to view the video? Is there any other source? It said it would take 5 1/2 hours in "free downloading" mode, 9 minutes with a "Gold" account.
Well, as one comment said, the video stops just as the debate is getting interesting. Do I have to pay another pound for another 5 minutes?
That bishop was fucking insufferable. How many times did he ask, "What are you trying to say...with this?" without giving them a chance to answer? Jerk.
And either John or Michael said that they didn't find out until after the debate that Muggeridge and the Bishop had arrived late and missed the first part of the film, where they make it very plain that Brian is NOT Jesus. But they make it pretty plain throughout, putting Jesus in other scenes, and deliberately leaving him out of the crucifixion scene. So maybe they left early, too. Self-righteous fucks.
Found some photos of Darren Boyd, the actor playing John. I have seen him in a few TV programmes but didn't know his name. There is a slight resemblance of John....
