(I've searched, and searched, and I THINK there aren't any posts on this. I hope i'm right!)

Have you all realized that, in lots of shows (mainly American) Brits are portrayed as horrible, nasty, disgusting bums?
If it were only in one show, OKAY, but it's in a whole bunch

    Here's a recent(ish)one:
    iCarly's Wade Collins

That's just one show. Usually we portray you as brilliant but eccentric, or as upper class twits/snobs.

On behalf of America, I'm sorry.

    Hey, is that David Archuleta?

H'wood's "British Stereotype" is highly educated (M/F), the males are stereotyped as somewhat less "manly" by American standards, the Females are *always* smart and sexy and totally hot.

Comedies are about creating characters who run counter to stereotype, so in comedies, male-Brits are either brutally-stupid and uncouth or complete fairies. The Hot-Brit-Females are so irresistible that producers seldom deviate from the stereotype, even when the original screenwriter writes her as dumb (for laughs), the producers rewrite her as Hot-Sexy-Brit and maybe, clumsy or snobbish, but still smart-hot-sexy.

Could be worse, I don't think there are any American-written British characters we need to apologize for, but that leaves open the question of who takes the blame for Russell Brand?
  1.
    Yup, that's David Archuleta!
And don't worry, I'm not British. This was just something I've realized over the past few years- and since I haven't really been to England, I wanted to know why :)
But that's true, WmCElliot! Sometimes they are portrayed in a positive light (but then again, sometimes they're not)

    Here's another from F.R.I.E.N.D.S :

    Amanda the perfect arse

Also Emily Waltham's parents aren't too great either, but I couldn't find a video with 'em.

Sometimes we have to let 'characters speak for themselves. Comedy and satire do not necessarily represent cultures as a hole.
  2.
I have to say, I've mostly seen them portrayed as high-class gentlemen, or fairies. But I'm a complete anglophile, so I'm pretty biased. I would have probably gone for Ken Shabby...

Geore Washington? No, he was a colonist.
What? Mrs. Marple. Oh, sorry. British women. Yes, very smart and uh, sturdy! Even Mrs. Doubtfire was found to be sexy by her busdriver.
We all have something to love.

    Emma Peel?
    James Bond?
Giles (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer)?
John Cleese (pick any of his roles)?
Mrs. Marple is the exception, but she's still extraordinarily brilliant.
Sir Alec Guinness never played a buffoon (to my knowledge), nor had Richard Burton.
David Niven was always witty and fun, usually playing a playboy.

Contrast that with how Americans are generally portrayed in British films, as brutal and bloodthirsty imbeciles, and I don't really think we (Americans) have much to apologize for.

I love American men; south, north, east west...I love Brits. I am not sure which ones Sgt. Looney is talking about, but, then I am probaly not aware of some of the younger portrayals. I think we American's go out of our way to idolize the British male. It is frequently said that a british accent makes a man immediatly desirable regardless of who he is. I was being flippant about the English woman. I have read where Queen Elizabeth is considered sexy . She should be with her style ( I do not mean clothes) and fortitude. Diana was priceless. Emma Peel a role model to many. Wow, she was great!
I really cannot comment on Britain's portrayal of American men. We have a habit of portrayaing ourselves in less than desirable terms at times so we may have ourselves to blame. I think Clark Gable and Fred Astaire were two of best actors of yore. Love George Clooney and Bruce Willis.
David Niven. His autobiography, "The Moon's a Balloon" is hysterical and yes, he was a playboy!
Hugh Laurie is fabulous. Yes. We portray them well.

David Niven's other book, "Bring on the Empty Horses", is also a great book. (Not enough details to be certain, but I think David Niven was one of the British Commandos who carried-out a raid on a Nazi radar installation planned and instigated by none other than Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels.)

I knew there was a second, but, never read it. I did see a movie or read a book about Fleming, the quintessential, Bond. We had a string on favorite Bond actors once. I like them all, surprise, Sean Connery is my favorite!

Is he related to Ralph Fiennes "The English Patient"? I think he is wonderful. I cannot remember Joseph unless I see him. I just started watching reruns of House this year. It is so much fun! I still do not know what happened to his hip! It is like a detective mystery.

"Johnny English" is great! Rowan Atkinson certainly learned a lot from John about writing embarrassing scenes. I imagine British people would think this movie was much funnier than Americans would, but it's still very funny--lots of great slapstick, which works in any language.

I'll bet John talks to himself (mutters, more likely, and talks himself through things to filter out distractions), and sings in the shower and maybe even rehearses lines in the shower. But he probably doesn't haul out old Python sketches. That was a long time ago; he said once that most of them can't remember how the sketches go anymore. It's just us obsessive fans who do.

I'd be willing to bet he'd find that sort of thing monotonous pretty quickly, and he'd hate being tied down by a long-term business contract. He's said he won't do any more television; he's sick of it, it's no fun, the studios are all scared to death of the sponsors and won't go with anything the focus groups don't like. Too bad, because he improves anything he's in over here in the US.

As much as he says he hates working, I think he loves being able to pick and choose assignments.
  5.
I've always thought he thrives on work.
I think that if he didn't "have to" work, he'd probably do it anyway, because he'd go crazy sitting around doing nothing.

What thu? Where is my post? I said...

I hope he writes a movie for himself including screenwriting and casting. He should direct with himself as the star. I do not know what it would be about but, maybe
it could write about something he knows... Blondes. Southern Blondes...British blondes...yankee gals...Israeli babes...Itallian and Spanish blondes and brunettes ...Irish gals. You know...WOMEN! He could be the star stud with bionic body parts falling off here and there, and wordless responses ( some things defy comment).

Yes, he should write a movie. Foote and I will produce, snicker snicker!

He could play a 22 years old sexy blonde who is studying chemistry in Harvard despite everyone said that she couldn't because of her natural lack of intelligence, a girl with a truly big heart, point that no-one has ever noticed because of the obvious anatomical inaccessibility, and beautiful deep blue eyes, point that no men has ever noticed because of other round, turgid pair of organs she has.

    Now THAT would be interesting.

I'd play his left knocker. And I'm available to be the right knocker's stunt if necessary.
