I took my daughter "downtown" to our picturesque green and shops so she could have her first Chinese lesson. There was a huge traffic jam, and lots of people milling about. Traffic cones in the road, so I thought there'd been a big accident. But it was a crew filming scenes from "Great Hope Springs", a movie starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and Steve Carrell! All the crew and equipment were two shops down from the food market I wanted to drop into, so I dropped Miss Thing off and walked across the street and went into the store, thinking they weren't filming there. A crew member chased after me and said, "I'm sorry ma'am, the store is actually closed." I'd bumbled onto the goddamned set! Thank god I didn't actually interrupt a scene.

Of course I apologize profusely and got out of there as fast as I could. But still...:shamed::shamed::shamed::shamed::shamed:

So anyway, I stood with the crowd that was hoping to get a glimpse of Meryl, who was rumored to be about somewhere. It was kind of fun. One of the guys I do Christmas caroling with, who works as a stand-in, voice over actor, and other theatrical stuff, was working as an extra on the set. We were too far away for me to wave or holler. I did get several glimpses of Ms. Streep as she did her scene, which involved her walking out of the shop, looking sideways for a second, then turning around and staring back. She had to do this scene 5 or 6 times, and all we got was a 2 second look from a distance. Some of the people were very badly behaved, crossing the line, pushing ahead of others to get a better view, using their camera flash, talking too loud. The crew could not have been nicer. They must all have taken sedatives before they came, because they were so kind and patient. Let's see, iirc, a baby started crying during one shot, two dogs starting fighting in another, and somebody squealed excitedly during another. I don't know if that's why they had to do so many takes, or if they just were fussing with the lighting and other technical details.

There was some comic relief in a very elderly couple who said they needed to get down the street to get to their car. The young crew member let them pass between scenes, and the couple walked right into the shop where Ms. Streep was. I don't know if they were clueless or if it was more "We're old, who gives a shit?" They were very cute, dressed badly and all bent over, both of them significantly shorter than me. LOL

Small town excitement.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the US, the day we give thanks to some diety or other for being greedy, fat slobs who eat to the point of being sick then eat even more during the football game. Somewhere in between, we set up the Christmas tree after the dishes are done.

But not at my house. This year, we'll be having dinner with Mr. Thing's family, eating traditional Thanksgiving Day foods, and not setting up a Christmas tree. For goodness' sake, let one holiday end before starting another!

Traditional T-day foods in New England include: turkey; stuffing made with bread crumbs, sage, thyme, garlic, salt, butter, onion, and sometimes celery and nuts; cranberry sauce; apple, pumpkin, and sometimes other kinds of pie; mashed potatoes; sweet potatoes; butternut squash; boiled turnip; green bean casserole made with green beans, Campbell's cream of mushroom soup, and French's fried onions in a can; salad, and I'm probably forgetting a few other things. We always have stuffed grape leaves from an Americanized recipe of Mr. Thing's yaya's (grandmother's) creation. I don't like them, but the rest of the family does. Mother-in-law Thing stuffs them with hamburger and cooks them in tomato sauce. I much prefer the traditional kind.

Anyway, if you're celebrating, have a happy day.

I have it on best authority that the reason John Cleese is getting married right now, is so that in his most pythonesque manner he can disrupt THE ROYAL WEDDING by dragging in a bride to Westminster Abbey at the very last minute to the front, and show his demand-to-be-married ticket to the official in charge of the whole affair,
and THEN, then he plans on announcing that his intended ALL ALONG, was KATE MIDDLETON, and that he will challenge PRINCE WILLIAM to a duel, whereupon he will leave to have tea as the whole wedding party is in an uproar of nothing but chaos and fighting and whose-your-daddy. I sincerely hope the right people get wind of this, namely the rest of the Pythons, before this turns into yet another British Tabloid Media Frenzy. God Bless Kate and William.
